How Do You Choose a Fireproof Safe?
Choose a fireproof safe by matching its stated fire protection to the contents you need to store, then checking its usable space and installation requirements. A safe for paper records may not provide suitable protection for digital media. If you also store cash or jewelry, compare burglary resistance separately.
What Does a Safe's Fire Rating Tell You?
A fire rating describes a safe's performance under specified test conditions. Compare the test standard, duration, exposure temperature, and permitted interior temperature together. A duration alone does not tell you whether two safes passed the same test.
Check who performed the test and which model the result covers. An independent classification and a manufacturer's stated fire rating should not be treated as interchangeable without checking their test criteria. Our guide to safe fire ratings explains the distinctions.
Are Any Safes Completely Fireproof?
No safe provides unlimited protection against every fire; a fire-resistant safe protects contents within its stated test conditions. The word “fireproof” is commonly used for fire-resistant safes, but the documented test conditions define the protection you are buying.
A longer tested duration can be useful when comparing otherwise equivalent models. It does not guarantee that belongings will survive every building fire, and it does not establish protection against water or forced entry.
Can a Fireproof Safe Store Documents and Digital Media Together?
Store documents and digital media together only when the safe's specifications cover both types of contents. Paper, backup drives, and other media do not necessarily tolerate the same heat and humidity. Check the manufacturer's stated media suitability before using a document safe for backups.
For paperwork, measure folders and binders rather than just loose sheets. Check interior width, depth, shelf spacing, and the door opening. Leave room to retrieve a folder without emptying the safe. The safe size guide helps you plan usable capacity.
Does Fire Protection Include Water and Burglary Protection?
Fire protection, water resistance, and burglary resistance are separate specifications. A fire-rated model is not automatically waterproof or burglary-rated. For water protection, look for the stated exposure conditions and duration; resistance to spray does not establish resistance to submersion.
For valuables that also need theft protection, compare models with a documented burglary classification and suitable anchoring provisions. Choose from the wider home safe collection if your priorities include both fire and burglary protection.
What Should You Check Before a Fireproof Safe Delivery?
Before ordering a fireproof safe, confirm the delivery route, supporting floor, door clearance, and manufacturer-approved installation method. Exterior depth may need additional clearance for the handle and hinges.
Use only the designated mounting points and follow the model's installation instructions. After installation, follow the lock's battery or servicing instructions and keep the door closure clear.
