How Do You Choose the Best Home Safe?
The best home safe for you depends on what you store, the protection you need, and where you can install it. For household records, compare fire ratings and usable document space. For jewelry and cash, prioritize burglary resistance and approved anchoring. If you store both, look for a model with separate fire and burglary ratings.
| What You Want to Store | What to Compare |
|---|---|
| Passports, certificates, and household records | Fire rating and interior dimensions that fit your folders |
| Jewelry, watches, and cash | Burglary rating, anchoring provisions, and interior organization |
| Documents and valuables together | Separate fire and burglary specifications on the same model |
| Larger items or a growing collection | Usable shelf space, door opening, and room for future storage |
Make a list of your contents before comparing models. Measure the largest item, including its box or folder, so you can rule out safes that will not fit it. Our safe buying guide walks through the key factors to compare.
How Do Fire and Burglary Ratings Differ?
Fire ratings describe performance under specified fire-test conditions. Burglary ratings address resistance to forced entry. A longer fire rating does not automatically mean stronger burglary protection.
For a fire-resistant safe, compare the test standard, duration, and temperature information provided for the model. For theft protection, look for a stated burglary classification and check what that classification covers. A lock specification alone does not describe the security of the whole safe.
If you need both types of protection, compare models that list both. Avoid choosing solely by weight, appearance, or the word “fireproof.”
What Size Home Safe Do You Need?
The right home safe must fit your belongings inside and your chosen location outside. Check interior measurements before relying on cubic-foot capacity, especially for binders, document folders, and jewelry boxes.
Allow space for shelves and items you may add later. Then check the exterior dimensions, handle clearance, and room needed to open the door fully. For more help planning capacity, read our safe size guide.
For delivery, measure doorways and tight turns along the route to the installation location. Identify stairs or other access restrictions before ordering.
Should You Choose an Electronic or Dial Lock for a Home Safe?
An electronic home safe lock suits code entry on a keypad, while a mechanical dial suits battery-free operation.
Compare the actual lock fitted to each model. For electronic locks, review battery replacement and low-battery instructions. For either type, check how combination changes and authorized servicing are handled.
Where Should You Install a Home Safe?
Install a home safe where you can use it comfortably and secure it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Consider the supporting floor, available anchoring surface, moisture exposure, and door clearance.
Confirm the anchoring method before purchasing. Use the designated mounting points and approved installation procedure for the model. For an in-floor safe, plan the installation work before choosing its final location.
Are Fireproof Safes Also Waterproof?
Fireproof safes are not automatically waterproof; water protection requires a separate specification. Check the individual safe’s water-resistance specifications and the conditions they cover.
Protection against spray or sprinkler water should not be treated as proof that a safe can withstand flooding or submersion. Choose against the stated performance of the model, rather than assuming every home safe provides the same protection.
